Polymer clay: why did I choose it.

Macarena Fuentealba

Surely more than one @ has used or has seen a kind of plasticine that has been called "fimo". This is the same case as Tippex, where a trademark name is generalized as usage to name the material. Well, the happy fimo is nothing more than the polymer clay of the German brand Staedtler. Now do you know what I mean? Well, this is polymer clay. But what is it exactly?

Polymer clay is a polymer, so yes, it is indeed made of plastic - it's basically PVC (polyvinyl chloride). If you have touched it, you will know that it is a very malleable material that is fired at about 130 degrees, which is why many boys and girls use it at home to make crafts. Personally, I do not advise you to use the oven where you cook the food that you are going to eat with the fumes from the polymers... but the decision is yours.

If this clay is made of plastic and my brand stands for sustainability, why did I choose to work with this material? The answer is quite simple: on the one hand, I don't have the means or a suitable workshop to make ceramics; and on the other, it seemed like a good idea to use such a harmful material for the environment in a positive and creative way. In addition, ceramic is very delicate and it is enough to drop it once for it to shatter. However, once polymer clay is (well) baked, it lasts a long time and is difficult to break.

Obviously, depending on how you take care of it, it will last more or less. If you are worried that it will cause you or the little ones some kind of adverse reaction, don't worry, it is not harmful -neither to work with it nor to wear it. If you still don't trust it, you can try the Pardo brand, made from beeswax. It's more difficult to knead and work with, but it's more natural.

I hope I was able to shed some light on this material and that you're now encouraged to try it/wear it. If you have any doubts or questions, you can leave a comment.

Thank you for reading me 'till the end and see you next time!

Be safe.
